Teaching Unnotated Ornamentation in Mozart to Piano Students Today

The paper examines the role of ornamentation in Mozart’s time and offers an approach that allows a modern pianist to develop original embellishments for Mozart’s slow movements without any formal training in improvisation.
Dr. Kevin Ngo is a Canadian musicologist, piano teacher and freelance pianist. In addition to teaching privately in Medicine Hat, where he lives with his wife and three children, Ngo teachers at the Lethbridge Piano Intensive and performs with the Fourtitude Pianos Ensemble. His research focuses on ornamentation in Mozart’s keyboard music and aims to make it more accessible today.
